- The thyroid gland may be entirely absent or greatly reduced (due to birth,diseases or surgically removed)
- A missing or abnormally developed thyroid gland
- Pituitary glands failure to stimulate the thyroid
- Defective or abnormal formation of thyroid hormones
- Lack of Iodine
- Inability of the gland to produce thyroxine
- Inherited
